Lesson summary
The heart’s basic role of pumping blood around the body is widely known. But how does the heart muscle actually function, and what can interrupt its proper functioning? In this lesson, students gain a practical understanding of the heart, blood vessels and blood pressure through hands-on experimentation, before creating a campaign that helps others understand this biological system and take care of their hearts and health.
Learning intentions:
Students will...
- understand the purpose and function of the heart and blood vessels
- understand how blood pressure functions, and its impact on health.
Success criteria:
Students can...
- describe the chambers of the heart and the flow of blood around the heart
- demonstrate blood flow using a model of the heart
- demonstrate high blood pressure resulting from blocked blood vessels, using a model of the heart.
