Lesson summary

Students will examine the effect that events and influences have upon the personal circumstances of individuals. Students reflect upon the experiences and circumstances that have shaped them personally by completing an influences mind map. Parts 3 and 4 of THE OASIS are then viewed, and students track a character, noting the personal circumstances that are influential throughout their story. Students then complete a Future Wheel to analyse how the experiences of a character have influenced their health and well being. Students explain how homelessness often has underlying root causes that require acknowledgement in order for the issue to be effectively addressed.

Key ideas to explore:

  • There are a number of unique causes and consequences of youth homelessness.
  • Homelessness can adversely affect young people on a day-to-day and long-term basis.
  • There are many influences in the formation of a person’s identity.
