Work through this resource material in the following sequence:

Part A: News article analysis

Ask students to read the news article 'One Night Stand’s Jamie Green’s Journey from Homelessness to Social Entrepreneur' on the Student Worksheet. Students then show their understanding by creating a list of ten questions and responses based on the content of the article.

Note: This activity could be extended by asking students to form pairs and conduct interviews with each other using the questions that they have written.

Part B: An idea for a social enterprise

Step 1.

Students research an existing social enterprise to further understand the concept, and detail the information they find on the Student Worksheet. Students should outline the details of the enterprise, including what they do and how they improve the health of homeless people in the community. They are provided with the list below. Students could also research a social enterprise that they find online.

Step 2.

Students imagine and plan for their own social enterprise with a focus on positively impacting upon the issues surrounding homelessness. Ask students to copy the planning tool from the Student Worksheet (below) to help them plan. In their design, students should consider the needs of homeless youth (including the skills they may need to develop and the skills they may already have), how their program will be funded and how people will access it.

Step 3.

Ask students to reflect on their social enterprise plan by responding to the questions on the Student Worksheet. The prompts they respond to include:

Outline the main features of your program/social enterprise
Explain how the social enterprise you have planned may help improve the physical, social and/or mental health of homeless youth.

Reflection

Ask students to complete the following reflection question on the Student Worksheet:

In your opinion, how successful could your planned social enterprise be? Expand on your response by describing what the easiest part of running your social enterprise will be, as well as what the hardest part will be.

Differentiated Learning

Extension: Ask students to create a presentation about their intended social enterprise for the class. Conduct a vote for the idea that the class is best able to achieve together and work towards implementing the program in your local community.

Provisional Learning Support: Students could use a highlighter to identify the key aspects of the article, as well as the terms and concepts that they find challenging. They could then respond to the following questions:

What were the social and physical environmental factors that led to Jamie Green becoming homeless?
Did Jamie experience primary, secondary or tertiary homelessness? What evidence from the article supports your answer?
What led Jamie to start a social enterprise?
Explain what you think a social enterprise is. You could spend some time on a web search of the term in order to better understand it.
How does Jamie Green’s business support homeless youth?
In your opinion, how does social enterprise help support the overall health of the community?

When planning their social enterprise, students could create an annotated poster of their plan.
