Imagine if the world was reduced to the equivalent of just one village of a 100 people with all the existing human ratios remaining the same. Using Table 1 below to estimate the number of people in each of the groups. For example, how many people in the village would be malnourished? Have internet? Have a computer?

5. Given that 21 people live on US $1.25 per day or less, find:

a. Ratio of those that live on less than $1.25 to those that live on more.

b. Calculate the number of Australian’s, given this ratio, would:

i. Live on less than $1.25

ii. Live on more than $1.25

6. If Australia’s population was representing the world’s population, given that 4,400,000 people own 75% of the entire wealth of the community, find the ratio of those wealthy, to those that are not as wealthy.

Discussion questions

Question 1) In our village of 100 people, nearly 75% of all the wealth was in the hands of just 20 people and all belonged to just one country. Which country do you think this is? Explain your reasoning.

Question 2) How many people in this village had a computer or went to university? Do you think it is important for people to have access to these resources?

Question 3) Give some reasons why Australia’s capacity to sustain a large population is limited.

Question 4) Given the ratios that you learnt about today, do you think that there is an imbalance of resources? Explain your answer.
