Building Climate Agency Through Ocean Literacy

SecondaryYear 9 - 10Humanities and Social SciencesGeographyEnvironmentalClimate ChangeOceansSustainability

Equip your students with the knowledge and confidence to navigate climate challenges through the lens of ocean literacy. This Year 9 and 10 Geography unit explores the critical role of the ocean in regulating Earth’s systems, how our perceptions of climate shape responses, and the power of youth-led action in building a sustainable future.

Students will investigate the ocean as a living, interconnected system, drawing on insights from First Nations voices and climate scientists. They will critically evaluate how climate messages are framed, practise reframing challenges with optimism, and design creative outputs that engage peers in solution-focused thinking. Finally, they will research and assess strategies for climate action, creating their own personal contribution that demonstrates agency and impact.

By the end of the unit, students will understand the relationship between ocean and climate, apply critical literacy to climate communication, and be prepared to take informed, hopeful action in their communities and beyond.

Blue Minds has developed a unique safe space for you and your students to share your work and insights, straight from your classrooms. Jump into the lessons to learn more and join the community!
