These resources are part of the STOP the Coward Punch Education Resources, created in collaboration with Danny Green’s STOP the Coward Punch Campaign.

This English unit for Years 7 - 10, Language, Perspective and Community Awareness, has been designed to

  • investigate how language shapes perception, including the shift from ‘king hit’ to ‘coward punch’, and the impact of connotation and denotation
  • explore diverse texts and media, including Shakespeare, contemporary campaigns, film excerpts and statistical research, to uncover how society portrays aggression
  • develop analytical and creative writing skills by rewriting lyrics, adapting scripts and crafting messages aimed at reshaping attitudes toward violence
  • apply critical analysis frameworks to examine film techniques, authorial intent and audience engagement
  • compare different forms of media—such as song, film, logos and advertisements—to understand how they shape audience response and community discourse
  • use research findings to plan and craft persuasive or informative texts for a specific audience
  • reflect on individual and social responsibility, evaluating how perspectives, word choice and cultural narratives can influence attitudes towards violence
  • collaborate with peers to refine ideas, share feedback and craft narratives that challenge harmful stereotypes and promote safer, more empathetic communities.

By blending critical analysis, creativity and real-world data, students learn how powerful language and media can be in shaping perspectives on violence—ultimately contributing to more responsible, informed and compassionate communities.
