Lesson summary
In this lesson, students will solve problems involving volume, capacity and rates by investigating how the Kidston Pumped Hydro Energy Storage Project operates.
Learning intentions:
Students will...
- analyse pumped hydropower as a source of renewable energy by solving problems involving the volume and capacity of right prisms, as well as the circumference and area of circles and cylinders, based on real project data
- calculate and compare rates of water flow.
Success criteria:
Students can...
- estimate the area of an irregular shape using a grid
- calculate the volume of right prisms, including cylinders
- calculate and compare rates of water flow.

Curriculum Mapping
Australian Curriculum (v9.0) content description: Year 8 Mathematics
Students learn to:
- solve problems involving the volume and capacity of right prisms using appropriate units (AC9M8M02)
- recognise and use rates to solve problems involving the comparison of 2 related quantities of different units of measure (AC9M8M05)
- solve problems involving the circumference and area of a circle using formulas and appropriate units (AC9M8M03).
Relevant parts of Year 8 achievement standards: Students can use mathematical modelling to solve practical problems involving rates in measurement contexts. Students use appropriate metric units when solving measurement problems involving the area of composite shapes and volume of right prisms. Students use formulas to solve problems involving the area and circles.
NSW Syllabus outcomes:
- solves problems involving ratios and rates, and analyses distance–time graphs (MA4-RAT-C-01)
- applies knowledge of volume and capacity to solve problems involving right prisms and cylinders (MA4-VOL-C-01)
General capabilities: Critical and Creative Thinking, Numeracy
Cross-curriculum priority: Sustainability
Level of teacher scaffolding: High: the teacher will need to facilitate class discussions and complete a worked example.
