Dare to Dream is a unit of three lessons exploring the documentary, Like My Brother. Like My Brother follows Rina, Freda, Juliana and Jess on their journey from the Tiwi Islands to Melbourne and back home, as they dare to dream of becoming stars of Aussie Rules football. Each girl has unique sporting talents and ambitions. However, pursuing their dreams is not without obstacles, as the girls face the realities of living in a remote community and issues of access and equity. While offers from the big smoke are great, those in power down south often fail to grasp the enormity of distance, physically and psychologically, between the girls' home and culture, and living in a major city like Melbourne. The girls encounter triumphs and disappointments before defining success on their own terms.
Like My Brother offers an opportunity for students to not only examine women in sport but also develop an understanding of what ambition and dreams mean in the context of the challenges unique to remote communities, the role of connection to Country, family and culture, and what it takes to thrive in two worlds.
