Roots & Shoots - Investigating Habitats
These resources are part of the Roots and Shoots Education Resources created in collaboration with Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots program.
This Foundation–Year 2 Science, Maths, English and Geography unit, Investigating Habitats, has been designed to
- •develop students’ understanding of the interconnection between people, animals and the environment by exploring what makes our world both wonderful and challenging
- introduce students to threatened species in Australia, their needs for survival and the ways people can help protect and preserve their habitats
- explore the role of habitats in meeting the basic needs of animals, and examine how changes to these environments—natural or man-made—can impact ecosystems
- introduce data collection and analysis through hands-on activities such as conservation trails and column graphing, helping students interpret real-world environmental data
- teach students to map human-made, animal and environmental features in their school environment using photographs, symbols and collaborative observation
- empower students to identify and take action on a local issue by planning, implementing and reflecting on a class social action project.
With an emphasis on care, curiosity and action, this unit helps students develop a deeper connection to their environment and a sense of responsibility for the world around them.
