Tune In: The value of containers

Step 1

Place large pieces of poster paper around the room with one of the following questions on each:

What are the social benefits for communities to participate in Containers for Change?
What are the environmental benefits of participating in Containers for Change?
What are the economic benefits for communities participating in Containers for Change?

Allow time for students to move around the room and add answers to each poster.

Step 2

Display the three posters and discuss what has been included in each one. These three posters refer to the three pillars of sustainability. Containers for Change has been designed to be sustainable from a social, economic and environmental perspective.

Find Out: Finding the value

Step 1

Explain to students that to make their community more sustainable, they are going to create a behaviour change video to encourage community members to participate in the Containers for Change Scheme.

Show the video:

After watching the video, invite students to share what they learnt by describing the three elements (the Rider, the Elephant and the Path) and their role.

To connect with their audience and inspire behaviour change, students will need to incorporate these three elements:

Give the information that the viewer needs
Connect to their emotions to motivate the change
Make it easy for them to get where they need to go

In the case of promoting Containers for Change, this means that the videos created should:

Explain the scheme and how to participate
Give them a reason to participate (earn money, donate to good causes, protect our environment etc.)
Make it sound simple.

Step 2

Invite students to turn-and-talk and discuss the different channels they could share a persuasive video through. Maybe they could:

host the videos on the school website
share them on community groups' social media
connect with the local media (radio station, newspaper etc.) to share on their social media
share with family and friends.

Step 1

Explain to students that they will now form a group of 3-4 to create a 1-minute video promoting containers for change. Students can use the worksheet to plan their video.

It is recommended that students are placed in mixed-ability groups for this task so that they may support each other and work together to achieve success. Prior to students completing the task, discuss explicitly how roles and responsibilities can be shared out in the group to ensure that everyone is able to contribute in a manner that is manageable for them and that decisions are made in a way that is respectful to all needs and perspectives.

MANAGER

The manager is in charge of any equipment the group needs and is responsible for collecting and returning the equipment. In addition, the manager needs to tell the teacher if any equipment is broken or missing.

DIRECTOR

The director is in charge of ensuring the project stays on track and that all group members understand what is expected from each step of the project. The director also needs to offer encouragement and guidance but is not the group leader (this responsibility falls to all students - see above).

SPEAKER

The speaker is in charge of asking for help from the teacher or from other groups. They are the only group member who can leave the group to seek advice from outside the group and report back. However, the teacher can visit the group and speak to all group members, and all group members can share the group's ideas and results when asked.

Step 2

Provide students with the ‘Containers for Change Videos’ worksheet and allow time for them to develop their videos. It may be helpful to conduct this part of the lesson in an outside area where groups can spread out to conduct their filming and have access to natural landscapes and bins for use in their videos.

Reflection

Provide time for each group to share their video. After each video, have them share;

Who do they intend to share the video with?
How they incorporated the three elements of behaviour change (give the information needed, connect to emotions, make it easy)?
