Developing Practices and Skills in Visual Arts: Designing For Identity

SecondaryYear 9 - 10The ArtsVisual ArtsEconomicDesign Thinking

This unit of lessons will explore how to work collaboratively on a Hoodie design art project that serves the wider community. Using AIME’s Making of a Hoodie (MOAH) podcast students will analyse how ethical and sustainability factors impact clothing design as well as investigate the role of fashion in fostering and enhancing a sense of identity by designing a hoodie to be a part of the school uniform that represents their community. Students will also explore how to give and respond to feedback and practicing sensitivity in their designs and collaboration process. The lessons in this unit aim to facilitate strong, respectful and enjoyable collaborative practices which culminate in a design that represents the class or the school community and fosters a sense of belonging and identity.

The parameters are yours to decide. Hoodies may be designed for a particular group in the school, as a jersey for a particular cohort, or a uniform.

If you would like to take this unit further and manufacture the hoodies you create it may be a good idea to reach out to community groups and/or businesses who would be interested in sponsorship.
