This Science, Maths, English and Geography unit for Years 3 - 6, Focus on Consumption, has been designed to
• explore the interconnectedness of people, animals and the environment through investigations into consumerism, waste and sustainability
• develop students’ understanding of the impact of everyday choices, particularly around plastic production and consumption, on ecosystems and communities
• teach students how to evaluate products for ethical and sustainable practices, and reflect on their personal needs, wants and consumer habits
• build leadership and communication skills by examining the traits of compassionate leaders and researching changemakers from around the world
• introduce data collection and interpretation through school-based surveys, allowing students to investigate local issues and identify opportunities for positive action
• guide students through planning, implementing and celebrating a social action project in their neighbourhood that addresses a humanitarian or environmental issue
By participating in these lessons, students become part of the global Roots & Shoots network—empowered to create a better world through informed decisions, leadership, and local action.
