Tackling Racism Through Sport

Go to

This unit looks at racism through the lens of sport. A powerful way to engage students in learning about this important topic, athletes talk about their experiences with racism and demonstrate how they lean into challenging conversations. Students will learn how to have such challenging conversations themselves and unpack the mechanisms of, and antidotes to, racism – including othering, generalisation and kindness. Each lesson contains journal prompts to support a contemplative learning approach.

It is recommended that this unit is delivered as a whole package. This will help students to strengthen their understanding of the concepts explored and inspire them to have healthy and constructive conversations about race and racism. It may also support students to challenge racist behaviours and attitudes in themselves and others.

Cool Australia would like to thank Reflect Forward for supporting the development of these lessons. Reflect Forward is a joint movement between racism education company, One Love Australia and the Australian sports industry. It’s about starting an ongoing conversation about racism in sport and working towards eliminating it at all levels throughout Australia.
