This unit explores place and liveability through the themes of sustainability, accessibility, connection and community engagement. The suite of stand-alone lessons enables students to investigate how various subjective and objective factors influence the quality of life for different people in different communities.
Students will examine the 20-minute neighbourhood concept to understand the benefits of having essential services nearby, as well as learn about how accessibility impacts different population groups by conducting audits to improve the accessibility of their community. The unit also delves into the connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Country to highlight the influence of culture and environment on liveability. Students will investigate the ‘Not in My Backyard’ (NIMBY) concept, to explore different perspectives towards sustainable development and how to propose balanced solutions to maintain quality of life and inclusive communities.
Completing the lessons in this unit will help students understand the concepts of place and liveability. Students will also be able to describe the importance of environments to people and the interconnections between people and place.
