This unit provides a comprehensive exploration of waste management and sustainability practices. Students will learn about landfill sites and their construction, and design their own waste reduction systems for a Pacific island eco-resort. They will also review and improve waste management in their own school, develop a safety code for learning about solid waste, and investigate local waste streams. Additionally, students will participate in a Waste Q&A quiz show, after researching the 4Rs + C (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Composting). The unit is designed for a flipped classroom, allowing students to learn new content independently and freeing up class time for hands-on activities and group work.
